Filter Cleanings
Keeping your pool filter properly maintained is essential for a healthy, clean pool. While regular cleaning is a key part of filter care, over time the cartridge will wear out and need to be replaced. Here’s how to know whether it’s time for a simple cleaning or if your filter has reached the end of its life and needs to be swapped out.
WHEN TO CLEAN THE POOL CARTRIDGE FILTER
The pool filter cartridge needs to be cleaned whenever the filter pressure gauge increases by around 8PSI, or pounds per square inch, above the normal operating pressure.
Another rule of thumb is to clean your pool filter cartridge at least every six months. Setting a regular schedule makes it easy to stay on top of maintenance and ensures your cartridge gets the care it needs, something Nuwave can help you manage with ease.
If there is a change in water quality, you’ll want to inspect the filter cartridge; it may just need a good cleaning.
WHEN TO REPLACE A POOL FILTER CARTRIDGE
Many determining factors can impact the life of a cartridge filter, but they typically last 3-5 years. Here are a few of the signs it’s time for a new cartridge.
Changing Water Quality: If your pool water stays cloudy or green even after balancing chemicals, it might be time to check the filter cartridge. Each time the filter cartridge is cleaned, the fibers break down slightly, making it easier for fine debris to pass through and reducing filtration performance.
Increased Cleaning Frequency: If your pressure gauge regularly rises more than 8 PSI after cleaning, it’s likely time to replace the cartridge.
Damaged Filter: Each time your filter is cleaned you should inspect it for any tears or damage in the fabric. The filter cannot properly filter out debris if damaged, and will cause a dirty pool.
Check Filter Bands: Cartridge filters have horizontal bands around them to keep the pleats spaced correctly. If the bands are loose, falling off or missing, the filter should be replaced.
SALT CELL REPLACEMENTS
Salt cells are a highly effective way to sanitize your pool. At Nuwave, we recommend cleaning salt cells AT LEAST every three months. We don’t just rinse them off; we use the right solvents and chemicals to remove the organic and chemical buildup in your system.
WHEN TO REPLACE A SALT CELL
Here are a few indications that your salt cell likely needs to be cleaned, repaired, or replaced:
The SCG isn’t producing chlorine (could potentially indicate a cell issue)
Amperage is irregular (Ideal is below zero or just above zero)
The voltage is higher than normal.
The cell warning light displays consistently, shutting off for only a short period after cleaning.
The power center displays a check salt message when a water sample shows normal salt levels.
